Dr Hanner’s molecular biodiversity research expertise has focused primarily on the DNA-based identification of fishes. Collectively, he and his students have helped lay the foundations for an advanced biomonitoring system involving eDNA detection capabilities. Some of the tools developed by Hanner’s team are already being used by the environmental services sector to detect aquatic species at risk and other valued ecosystem component species.

Dr Hanner and his team will genetically profile and subsequently develop species-specific molecular probes for the freshwater fishes of Canada—the foundations of GEN-FISH’s Genomics Toolkits. The Hanner lab also has extensive expertise in making science accessible: hosting webinars, workshops and conferences on environmental DNA, including an upcoming international conference. They will use this experience to facilitate knowledge translation and transfer of the GEN-FISH research to other stakeholders in academia, government and nongovernment organizations, and the environmental services sector.

With increasing threats to the aquatic environment, it is essential that we also evolve our technologies to identify issues and potential solutions quickly.
