Dr. Higgs is an expert in underwater acoustics and the effects of noise on fish behaviour and fitness. He specializes in the role acoustics play in fish communication and the ways the changing underwater soundscape affects fish populations in marine and freshwater environments.

Working with two GEN-FISH students, Dr. Higgs will examine the damaging effect of underwater noise on sensitive fish populations. He will first assess transcriptional responses and then use field assays to determine the degree of stress on wild fish populations. This work will expand our understanding of the extent of this threat and help establish guidelines for acceptable exposure limits to better protect our Canadian fisheries.

With increasing threats to the aquatic environment, it is essential that we also evolve our technologies to identify issues and potential solutions quickly.
