Dr. Fitzgerald’s research focuses on the intersection of harms perpetrated against people, non-human animals, and the environment. She is an expert in animal ethics and animal abuse and has published extensively in the fields of critical animal studies, green criminology, and environmental sociology. She has been the recipient of several grants, awards, and fellowships in recognition of her scholarship, most recently Harvard University’s Animal Law and Social Policy Fellowship.

Dr. Fitzgerald will be working with two graduate students to assess the emerging ethical concerns with using genomics tools to assess fish health and the ensuing selection of fish phenotypes to maximize adaptability. The team will be employing case study analyses, media analysis, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews with stakeholder groups and members of the general public to analyze the emergent ethical issues and assess how these may impact social acceptance and adoption of the genomic toolkit.

With increasing threats to the aquatic environment, it is essential that we also evolve our technologies to identify issues and potential solutions quickly.
