Dr. Jeffries is an expert of fish physiology and comparative transcriptomics. The Jeffries Lab uses these approaches to examine how environmental stressors (such as temperature and habitat degradation) affect the cellular stress response and overall health of fishes.

With the help of two graduate students funded by the GEN-FISH program, Dr. Jeffries will apply his extensive expertise in transcriptomics to the development and validation of the Fish Health Toolkit. This Toolkit will allow organizations to determine whether Canada’s wild fish populations can successfully cope with environmental stressors like those related to climate change, for example.

With increasing threats to the aquatic environment, it is essential that we also evolve our technologies to identify issues and potential solutions quickly.
