Dr. Sharma’s research examines the impacts of multiple environmental stressors on lakes. In particular, she leads international multidisciplinary teams to understand how climate change affects lake ice cover, water temperatures, water quality, and fish communities.

With the help of graduate students funded by the GEN-FISH program, Dr. Sharma will be able to characterize fish community composition between historical and contemporary time periods for 500 lakes and rivers in Canada. With this research, her lab will be able to compare conventional fish sampling methods with novel eDNA methods.

With increasing threats to the aquatic environment, it is essential that we also evolve our technologies to identify issues and potential solutions quickly.
